What are Stem Cells?

Stem cells are one of the most fascinating fields in modern biology. They have important properties and serve as our body's repairing kits. Renewal and repairing are ongoing processes in human body. Adult stem cells supply the necessary cells for this replacement. They have been identified in over 20 organs or tissues. Two key features set them apart from ordinary cells: They can differentiate into a diverse range of specialized cells of the same tissue and they have the remarkable ability to renew and regenerate themselves through cell division throughout a person's life. This makes stem cells especially valuable and important in regenerative skin care research.



In 2008, Mibelle Biochemistry launched PhytoCellTec™ Malus Domestica, a brand new active ingredient based on plant stem cells – stem cells from the now almost legendary Uttwiler Spätlauber apple. Following its motto “inspired by nature – realized by science”, Mibelle Biochemistry laid the foundation for uniting nature and science to extract new raw materials from plants with new applications. Often described as “the magic Swiss apple”‚ “the miracle anti-aging apple” or “the super apple”, the active ingredient PhytoCellTec™ Malus Domestica is now available around the world. It was the world's first raw material based on plant stem cells.


Apple Stem Cell

PhytoCellTec™ Malus Domestica is a liposomal active ingredient based on stem cells from the Uttwiler Spätlauber apple. The Uttwiler Spätlauber is an old Swiss variety, which is very rare today. It was known for its exceptional capacity to keep for long periods but gradually lost its popularity to sweet apples because of its bitter taste. As the apple could be stored for a long time without becoming shriveled or losing flavor, it clearly had special ingredients and especially long-lived stem cells. Mibelle Biochemistry was able to show in comprehensive studies that PhytoCellTec™ Malus Domestica, the active ingredient based on apple stem cells, promotes the vitality and longevity of skin stem cells, protects them from damage due to environmental stress and thus delays the skin aging processes.


Grape Stem Cell

PhytoCellTec™ Solar Vitis is based on stem cells from the Gamay Teinturier Fréaux grape – a grape from Burgundy, which is characterised by an extremely high content of polyphenols for UV protection. Extensive studies have shown that PhytoCellTec™ Solar Vitis reliably protects epidermal stem cells from UV stress and thus from skin aging caused by light. PhytoCellTec™ Solar Vitis increases the vitality and efficiency of all essential skin cells and improves the skin's resistance.


Alpine Rose Stem Cell

PhytoCellTec™ Alp Rose is a cosmetic ingredient based on stem cells of alpine rose leaves. The alpine rose is a typical Swiss flowering plant from the Alps. It has bright pink blossoms and grows at altitudes up to 3200 m. Its evergreen leaves are especially resistance to high UV radiation and extreme dryness and cold. The innovative PhytoCellTec™ technology has been used to develop a formula from the leaves' stem cells that treats dry and stressed skin.


Argan Stem Cell

PhytoCellTec™ Argan is based on stem cells of the Argan tree, one of the oldest tree species in the world. The argan tree is indigenous to the arid southwest of Morocco and has adapted perfectly to intense drought and extremely high temperature, which are typical in this region. Unfortunately, the Argan tree population has shrunk dramatically due to extensive cultivation of the land, so that nowadays the remaining Argan forests are under the protection of UNESCO. PhytoCellTec™ Argan was developed to improve the regenerative capacity of dermal stem cells thereby achieving deep-seated rejuvenation of the skin.


Symphytum Officinale Stem Cell

Symphytum officinale has been used as a medicinal plant for many centuries. In ancient Greece, physicians used symphytum to treat bone fractures and accelerate wound healing. Nowadays, it is still notably used externally for wound healing, inflammatory, traumatic lesions of muscles and joints. PhytoCellTec™ Symphytum is an active ingredient that is based on stem cells from the roots of comfrey (symphytum). It speeds up skin renewal through the activation of stem cells in the epidermis.


Saponaria Pumila Stem Cell

Saponaria pumila is an extremophile plant of alpine mountains that survived the last ice age by moving to rare ice-free peaks called nunataks. Constantly exposed to cold and high amounts of UV, this plant developed protecting and repairing mechanisms that enabled it to adapt to its challenging environment. Mibelle Biochemistry was able to show in extensive studies the capacity of PhytoCellTec™ nunatak® to maintain the regenerative potential of human dermal stem cells despite UV influence. This protective effect led to an increase in skin elasticity, firmness and density after 4 weeks of treatment.
